Online Research – Looking at the Positives

At Saros, we have been recruiting for online research since the technology first enabled us to do so. Early online research began with the occasional Skype video calls, very quickly followed by multiple platforms offering video chat as an option, from Facetime to Google Hangout. Now there are several platforms dedicated to online meetings and all are growing in popularity during the current times of restrictions of movement.

Whether you prefer Zoom, Teams, Lookback or GoToMeeting, these are all becoming household names, especially when it comes to online research.

In our last article we explored the pros and cons of online research from a researcher point of view, but with a sense that face-to-face research may return toward the end of 2020. Now that is no longer looking to be the case, it seems online research is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.

There are still many positives to be had from a researcher and respondent point of view, even with coronavirus aside for a moment.

Researchers can:

  • Save time and cost by not travelling to a venue
  • Easily reach a nationwide sample of participants
  • Leave incentive handling to us and not worry about handling cash
  • Collect consent forms and NDAs digitally ahead of the sessions, resulting in more time in the session to gain those valuable insights
  • Record sessions easily online without needing extra camera/recording equipment

Participants can:

  • Save time and cost by not travelling to a venue
  • Take part from the comfort of their own home
  • Take part at times of day that might otherwise have been impossible to attend
  • Still feel part of a group and have fun
  • Potentially feel more relaxed than they might in a room of strangers

Here are some recent testimonials from our participants who took part in online research:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of doing this over Zoom. Not only did it save me a long, stressful journey but I felt that as I was at home, I was more relaxed and found it easier to participate more fully.” GJ, Coffee Research

“Feedback from myself is all positive. Barring a few technical issues at the start, which meant the video was not working on Zoom but that quickly got resolved. The researcher was very patient through this issue but didn’t delay us progressing through the study. The whole process of registering for this study and taking part was all very smooth and the prompt payment was much appreciated.” NS, Savings and Investment Research

“I thoroughly enjoyed the research interview.  It was my first time doing a Zoom interview and I thought it was great.  I especially enjoyed seeing 4 different participants on the screen and knowing they were all based in other areas around the country.  It made me feel really involved.” SM, Eye Health Research

Our members all have a certain level of tech savviness, given that they need to sign up to our database via our website, reply to our emails and complete online screening forms. This puts them in good stead to handle the technology required for current online research. And in some ways, we can thank the lockdown for raising people’s awareness of video-chat platforms like Zoom and how easy they are to use. Once we have spoken to shortlisted respondents on the phone as well, they are fully prepared to handle online research and get the necessary devices in place and ready for the call. It’s one of the positives to have come out of the current situation – we’ll take that!
