What is “User Experience Testing” and what will I be asked to do?

User experience testing is essentially testing to find out everything you feel as a customer when using a website or app. If your experience is poor, chances are you will be unlikely to use that company again. However, if you have a good experience you are more likely to come back again and become a loyal customer.

Put in the most basic terms, companies really just want to know how, why and what you do when it comes using a website and/or app.

What will it involve?

Traditionally, a user test will mean you will take part by yourself and you will be watched by a researcher while you are asked to do various tasks on a website or app. Specialist software might capture your behaviour as you work through the tasks and the researcher might also ask for your opinions and feedback.

By watching, listening and questioning, with many different users, invaluable insight is gained. Maybe the website or app needs simplifying, maybe it needs to look more attractive, maybe it needs more depth and information? Whatever your opinions are when testing, positive, negative or both, they are all useful and welcome!

How long will it take?

Generally, most user experience tests take around 45 – 60 minutes and you would be asked to attend a venue to take part. However, some testing can and is done remotely so you may not even need to leave your home.

Of course, you wouldn’t be asked to do this for free and you will receive a thank you payment for taking part. The amount will depend on the length and complexity of the testing but typically it is anything from £30 - £100 either in cash or via BACs payment.
