Focus Groups: What will I be asked to do?

If you have just been accepted onto your first focus group, or you are in the process of applying for one, you might not really know what to expect. Here is a step by step guide to help ease any first-time nerves and hopefully answer any queries about what goes on in a group research session.

Be Prepared

You will receive a confirmation email from Saros which will give you the address/location details and a contact number for the venue/client. Pre-plan your journey so you know where you are going and try to arrive at least 10 minutes early. The sessions need to start on time, so that they can finish on time. If for any reason, you do get delayed, make sure you have the venue/client contact number to hand so that you can call them and let them know. In some cases there is a sign-in process in the reception which you need to allow time for too.

Nice to Meet You

The moderator (the person that will run the session) will start by introducing everyone else that is taking part in the group. They will usually start with an icebreaker task, something fun, that allows everyone to relax and get to know each other.

Down to Business

The moderator will then present topics or questions about the subject or brand/company that the research is about. They may also introduce things like product samples or potential advertising images or ideas. They will ask you to all give your thoughts, opinions and feedback in as much detail as you can. The Moderator’s job is to encourage and keep the session fun and exciting so don’t worry, you will never be made to feel pushed or under pressure, just give as much as you feel comfortable. We all want you to have fun and enjoy yourself!

The End

You will be given your incentive payment, usually in cash. You will have been notified before accepting to take part if you are to receive the payment another way (such as a bank transfer or by Paypal).

Things to Know

The end client may be observing the group from behind a one-way mirror and they may feedback to the moderator during the session, asking additional questions. The session will likely also be video or audio taped, usually for training purposes and report writing (and in accordance with Market Research Society regulations) and you will be notified before the session.

Remember to make sure you are signed up to Saros Research so you are always up to date on any focus groups we can offer you.
